The Caribbean Politics Specialist Group

The Caribbean Politics Specialist Group (CPSG) was established in November 2006. It aims to provide a focus for academics teaching and researching the politics and political economy of the Caribbean. But it also welcomes the participation and contribution of academics from outside these areas, for example in the Social Sciences more generally, History and Geography. The group concentrates on developing research links between academics working in the Caribbean, Europe and the United States. In addition, we aim to strengthen relations between the academic community and business, consultancy and policy organisations with the result of raising the profile of the Caribbean within the UK.

As well as creating a dedicated space on the PSA website, the objectives of the CPS are to organise group panels at the PSA annual conference and to convene seminars and workshops on contemporary issues and debates affecting the Caribbean.

Through the group we are also able to provide the names of academics that can provide information and advice on the region.

Forthcoming conference planned for 2012: '50 Years since Independence'
August 2012 will mark the fiftieth anniversary of independence in the Commonwealth Caribbean, as in the same month both Jamaica (August 6) and Trinidad and Tobago (August 31) gained their independence from Great Britain. Half a century is a short time in the history of a nation, yet it is sufficiently long to begin stock taking. The conference to be held in London will assess the successes, failures and legacies of independence, as well as looking forward to the next 50 years. Anyone interested in helping to organise the event and/or presenting a paper please contact Dr Amanda Sives at Amanda.sives@liverpool.ac.uk.

In particular it focused on those territories which retain formal links to European countries namely the United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands.
