Party leaders matter. The strategies, political choices and the characteristics of party leaders can have a profound effect on their party, their countries fortunes and the broader political system. Public opinion data consistently shows, however, that political leaders in democracies such as Britain are often unpopular both with the electorate and their party membership. This panel therefore seeks to contribute towards the theoretical frameworks through which we can understand and assess party leaders; assess the suitability of their personality traits and their MPs traits for office; the skill with which party leaders have managed their own party; and, appropriately adjusted to their political rhetoric when in office.
