Time Slot:
Monday 30th March 11:30 - 13:00

Panel Members:
  • Professor Philip Davies (Brunel University)
  • Dr Myron Varouhakis (Brunel University)
  • Mr Zana Gulmohamad (University of Sheffield)

This panel explores defence and military intelligence within several distinct settings. Davies and Gustafson use their joint experience advising the UK MoD to make analytical judgments on the business of intelligence within a military frame, and the prospects for intelligence within the armed forces approaching the 2015 SDSR. Arditti and Gulmohamad separately represent the challenges of coping with colonial overlay to military intelligence: Arditti within the historical case study of Malaya, and Gulmohamad with the contemporary example of Iraqi Kurdistan. The final area this panel explores is one that potentially touches all scholars who seek practitioner outlooks or impacts for their work. Whilst the setting is particular, Varouhakis' analysis of the human terrain system is of relevance to security scholars in how they position themselves in relation to state effort in armed conflict.
