This panel analyses the rhetorical construction of political discourses used by conservative Republicans by both political elites and at grass-root level. Specifically, the panel will determine, through the use of their political personas, how leading grass-root conservatives have impacted upon the style of rhetoric used by Republican elites. The panel will make particular reference to the rise of the Tea Party, the post-2008 economic environment, and the election of Barack Obama. By doing so it will become possible to discern how the apparent rise of conservative radicalism by grass root rhetoricians have affected the broader agenda of Republican Party elites. The panel will benefit from the expertise of Professor Robert Lehrman, who has researched widely on rhetoric in US politics. Moreover, Professor Andrew Gamble will be acting as a discussant, and Professor Alan Finlayson will be acting as the respondent. The panel will be chaired by Dr Simon Griffiths.
