WHO'S TALKING ABOUT YOUR RESEARCH? HOW ALTMETRICS CAN HELP YOU TRACK AND DEMONSTRATE BROADER IMPACTS

Tuesday 11th April, 12.30 - 13.30

Conference Room 2, Technology & Innovation Centre, University of Strathclyde

This lunch time session will cover an introduction to altmetrics: what they are, how they're collected, and how you can use them to your benefit. We'll look at some case studies of researchers who have used them to attract new funding and identify new collaborators, and discuss how they can be used to help manage your professional reputation.

In today's research landscape the need to demonstrate the broader influence of your work is becoming increasingly important: funders want to see how the projects they support are making a difference, institutions want to ensure they develop their faculty and programs in the best way, and collaborators want to work with people who can bring value to their projects.

Altmetrics can help with all of this. This lunch time session will cover an introduction to this emerging technology:

  • what these new metrics are
  • how they're collected
  • how you can use them to your benefit.

We'll look at some case studies of researchers who have used them to attract new funding and identify new collaborators, and discuss how they can be used to help manage your professional reputation.

There will be time for questions and we welcome an open discussion on the need for the responsible application of metrics, and how this might impact on you as researchers.
