BJPIR Article of the Year Roundtable: Was Brexit Inevitable?

Monday 26th March, 13:30-14:30, Cardiff City Hall

Best Article Prize Winner: Professor Helen Thompson (University of Cambridge)

Panelists: Dr Waltraud Schelkle (London School of Economics) and Professor Dan Wincott (Cardiff University)

Professor Helen Thompson is the winner of the BJPIR's 2017 Best Article Prize and will talk about her article: 'Inevitability and Contingency: The Political Economy of Brexit' (BJPIR, vol 19, issue 3). Although the referendum result was politically contingent, Professor Thompson argues that Britain's position as a non-euro member of the EU while possessing the offshore financial centre of the eurozone and Britain's eschewal in 2004 of transition arrangements on freedom of movement made Brexit an eventual inevitability, saving a prior collapse of the euro-zone.

Professor Thompson’s talk will be followed by commentaries by Dr Waltraud Schelkle and Professor Dan Wincott and questions and discussion points from the audience.
