This panel will take the form of a roundtable. Its aim will be to reflect upon the enormous contribution of Steve Ludlam to the study of labour and trade union politics and political economy in Britain, his analysis of the politics of Britain’s relationship with the IMF in the 1970s, and to the European Union in the 1990s, and his powerful contribution as a scholar and activist to the politics and political economy of Cuba and Cuban Trade Unionism. It will also reflect upon Steve’s vibrant contribution to the life of the Sheffield Politics Department over very many years, and to the PSA through his leadership of the Labour Movements Specialist Group between 1997 and 2005. The panel will cover Steve’s contribution through his teaching, and through mentoring junior colleagues, as well as through his scholarship. In the process it will celebrate his humanity, deep commitment to defending others and legendary sense of humour.
