We propose the following panel of three empirical papers, all exploring important aspects of public administration and administrative reform in British central government.  The subject matter is timely, given concerns about austerity and maximising the competence of administration. The data and analysis are novel, drawing on major new initiatives to survey trends in the state. The panel comprises a mix of early-career and established researchers.
