1984, New Authoritarianism and the Media

This event will both celebrate the recent 70th anniversary of George Orwell’s 1984 and consider the legacies and future of authoritarianism.

Tuesday 17th November (18:30-20:00)

Come along to discuss:

  • 1984 and modern parallels
  • 21st century authoritarianism (politics, parties, leaders)
  • The impact of the media
  • What this means for democracy.

Our guest speakers are Dorian Lynskey author of ‘The Ministry of Truth: the Biography of George Orwell’s 1984’ and D.J Taylor author of ‘Orwell: The Life’. Both will be speaking alongside OU POLIS academics Geoff Andrews and Precious Chatterje-Doody, with POLIS’s Donna Smith chairing.

Debate and discussion starts from 6.30pm (questions from the audience are encouraged!).

This is an online event, with attendance via Microsoft Teams.
