The PSA Specialist Group on Britishness will be holding a one day conference in association with the Academy for British and Irish Studies at the University of Huddersfield on 6th July 2013, entitled Educating the Nation(s): The Politics of History, Education, and Identity in the UK
The conference presents the perspectives of policy-makers, educationalists and academics across a range of disciplines on one of the most resonant and controversial elements of recent debates about citizenship and identity in the UK, namely concern regarding the content and purpose of history education in schools. Speakers include Peter Yeandle (University of Manchester), Elin Jones (Chair, Welsh Assembly History Review Group), Joke van der Leeuw-Roord (Executive Director, Euroclio - European Association of History Educators) and Andrew Mycock (University of Huddersfield). The conference will shed light on tensions and debate created by intensifying divergence in the aims and contents of history curricula in a UK state that is increasingly shaped by devolution and also more consciously multicultural and post-colonial.
The conference costs £20 (including lunch and refreshments). For more details please visit the group's website or contact the group treasurer Catherine McGlynn.
