Politics and International Relations in a Time of Transitions.
At home and abroad, the political landscape is changing. In the UK, the 2017 and 2019 general elections saw a return to two-party politics. Labour presented an unapologetically socialist manifesto, whilst the Conservative Party, under the premierships of Theresa May and then Boris Johnson, moved further to the ideological right in what some commentators have hailed as ‘the end of neoliberalism’. The most recent of those elections has forced political parties on the left of British politics, in particular, to re-evaluate what they stand for and how they can win back popular support in the future. Meanwhile, electoral competition between ‘young cosmopolitans’ and an ageing pro-Brexit population has highlighted divisions between younger and older voters, whilst a clear cultural divide also exists between provincial towns and big cities. Dealing with legacies of the past continues to be politically fraught, including the use and interpretation of artefacts and symbols in the public arena, New ways of doing politics and healing these divisions are sorely needed.
The full call for papers can be downloaded here.
The conference will take place Friday 26th March from 09:30-18:00 with access breaks built in so you can have time away from the screen!
Professor John Barry (Queen's University Belfast) will deliver our keynote speech on 'This is what a real emergency looks like: What the response to Coronavirus can teach us about how we can and need to respond to the planetary emergency'. Professor Barry will deliver his topical and entertaining keynote, before opening the discussion up and taking questions from our audience. To learn more about John and his keynote click here.
A big part of our conference is celebrating what is unique about Politics undergraduates. We aim to help students looking toward their future careers by hosting a panel of experts on 'political' careers.
This year we are pleased to welcome Emma Vardy (BBC), Professor Sarah Childs (Royal Holloway), Tanya Abraham (YouGov) and Hattie Andrews (Politics Project) to our panel. Students will hear from our panellists about their career pathways and experiences, and have a chance to put their questions to our fabulous panel! To learn more about our panel click here.
