Sport and the politics of identity
The 13th Annual Confernece of the PSA Sport and Politics specialist group hosted by Aston University's School of Language and Social Science
The theme of this year's conference is 'Sport and Politics of Identity'. The Sport and Politics specialist group is delighted to announce that Professor Ellis Cashmore will be delivering the keynote lecture. Much of Professor Cashmore's work explores the intersection between the dynamics of identity (particularly race and gender), media and sport. A list of his publications can be found here.
The date of the conference – Friday 29th March – coincides with the day the UK is set to leave the European Union. The conference organisers are welcoming papers that explore the potential impact of Brexit on sport and its role in the wider politics of identity in the UK and Europe. However, the conference is not restricted to neither Brexit nor UK sport-politics. Submissions that deal with all aspects of sport, politics and identity, from all relevant disciplines, are welcome.
The conference will also include, for the first time, a roundtable on teaching and learning in the area of sport and politics. The aim is to provide a forum to discuss and share approaches to sport and politics as a taught discipline. We would welcome short papers, case studies, and evaluation reports that address some of the different opportunities and challenges of teaching this interdisciplinary subject area, in terms of student engagement, curriculum design, assessment methods, and so forth.
The conference will start on Friday 29th at 10am and end at 6pm. For the evening before the conference (Thursday, March 28), we are inviting participants to an informal get-together at The Barton Arms in Aston (meeting at 7.30 pm). Accommodation can be booked on campus at Conference Aston Hotel (for approximately £90-120 bed and breakfast, including complimentary use of the gym and Birmingham’s oldest swimming pool) or at a range of hotels in nearby Birmingham city centre.
