Conference on the cabinet ministers of the Thatcher era
This conference - and the book project that will follow - explores the role that leading cabinet ministers of the Thatcher era played in creating and delivering what we call 'Thatcherism'.
Papers by leading academics in history and politics will offer critical biographies of the men (and woman) that Margaret Thatcher appointed to her cabinets between 1979 and 1990.
Ministers under discussion will include:
- Michael Heseltine
- Peter Carrington
- Douglas Hurd
- Kenneth Clarke
- Baroness Young
- Willie Whitelaw
The conference aims to de-centre Thatcher from the narrative of Thatcherism to examine how her government's agenda was designed and delivered by those around her - and how many of their achievements as ministers went against the grain of what she personally believed.
