In recent years, the spatial turn in the social sciences also started to affect democratic theory. New modes of participation are often framed as new participatory spaces. These debates explore invited spaces sponsored by state actors such as citizen assemblies, claimed spaces created by social movements such as occupied public squares, and closed spaces of governments such as parliamentary sessions. What this debate neglects, however, is to explain why such modes of participation are conceptualized in spatial terms. What is spatial about participatory spaces? These debates often use the spatial terminology in a metaphoric sense, detached from “real”, physical spaces. So what are participatory spaces? Why is participation a spatial practice? And how do concrete, physical places affect participation?
