Anti-Politics in Turbulent Times

The PSA Anti-Politics Specialist Group is pleased to invite paper and full panel proposals for the 2020 PSA conference, which will take place on April 6-8, 2020 in Edinburgh.
This year, the group makes a concerted effort to reach out to include perspectives on anti-politics from all sub-fields in political science, as well as related fields. These perspectives include but are not limited to the following themes:
- Anti-politics and the state of the literature: what conceptualisations and categorisations of anti-politics are best suited to analyse recent or reoccurring political events?
- Anti-politics and the media: do social media activism, clicktivism, hacktivism engender new ways of civic and political (dis)engagement?
- Anti-politics and technocratic governments: did the rise of experts in government make government look less legitimate?
- Anti-politics across regions: can we delineate meaningful patterns of anti-politics across Eastern and Western Europe?
- Anti-politics and the economy: does the continuing power of global business and financial elites turn people away from politics?
- Anti-politics and protests: what is the effect of anti-politics on activism and political parties?
- Anti-politics and populist rhetoric: what populist appeals do political leaders resort to when challenging ‘the elite/establishment’, and what is the impact of this rhetoric on political discourse more broadly?
All proposals should include name, affiliation and email of the presenter(s) and an abstract of maximum 300 words. Abstracts should include:
- Key research question(s)
- An indication of the methodology
- An indication of the main argument
- Five key words
You are very welcome to send whole panel proposals containing between three and five papers. Just a reminder that PSA rules do not allow for all male proposals. Panel proposals should contain a brief description of the panel.
Members as well as non-members of the specialist group are encouraged to apply. Applications from graduate students and early-career academics are welcome. All methodological approaches are welcome. Both single case studies and large N studies will be included. There is no limitation of geographical region or scope.
Submit all paper and panel proposals to [email protected] by Tuesday, October 15 so we can put the Anti-Politics Specialist Group submissions together before the final deadline of October 21, 2019.
