Why and how do we continue to support ‘Diverse Voices’ in Political Studies?

Recent HESA data and studies by the PSA/BISA (2021), Academy of Social Science (2024) and British Academy (2025) highlight a significant ethnic and gender disparity within the Political Studies and International Relations. We believe that academia is stronger when diverse voices are researching politics, articulating political values, and teaching the next generation that politics has space for everyone.

Therefore in 2022, the PSA as part of its commitment to advocate for a more diverse and inclusive discipline, launched the Diverse Voices programme. The programme offers tailored support, including mentoring, tailored workshops, small grants, networking opportunities and PSA membership to PIR scholars from underrepresented groups.

So far, the programme has impacted 47 scholars in total, who feel confident, have built strong networks and are making positive impact in the discipline.

Hear from our Diverse Voices Scholars:

“I had four main goals that I hoped to achieve through the programme: To transition from a PhD researcher to an early career researcher. To establish and highlight my research profile and contribute to political science pedagogy. To build networks, learn from peers, and engage in knowledge sharing. To safeguard and affirm my identity as a researcher from the Global South. Throughout the programme, the various activities and the engagement with diverse resource persons enabled me to make meaningful progress toward these goals. Each component of the programme contributed to my growth and helped me realise the professional and personal development I had envisioned. I was also able to form lasting friendships with colleagues—connections that I believe will be sustained for years to come” –  2024/25 scholar

“The programme met my goals and expectations. I wanted opportunities to develop my writing, connect with experienced mentors, and expand my professional network — all of which were delivered. The writing workshops were practical and constructive, helping me refine my ideas and strengthen my voice when advocating for myself with my supervisors. I also valued the chance to build a supportive network of peers and professionals, which I know will be an ongoing resource beyond the programme.” –  2024/25 scholar

The receipt of the PSA Diverse Scholar Award has installed a warm confidence and encouragement in me, that I and my doctoral research could possibly be a considered part of the intellectual political conversation. –  2022/23 scholar.
