The following was circulated to staff at the University of Manchester this morning.

“Dear Colleague,

We are very sorry to report the sad news that our former colleague Professor Mick Moran died yesterday after suffering a heart attack on Saturday.  Mick was a towering figure in the University and wider profession – highly esteemed and influential.  He was Head of Department in the former Department of Government, Dean in the former Faculty of Social Science, a member of the Politics RAE panel, longstanding editor of the journal Government and Opposition and author of many seminal works on British politics, regulation and public policy.  Mick was a tour de force in his teaching and his public speaking with oratory powerful, humane and humorous.  As a colleague he was kind, supportive, wry and wise.  

Through semi-retirement Mick has continued to write, research and contribute to political analysis and continued to make a huge contribution.  Thoughts are with his family especially and also friends and former colleagues who will be very saddened by this news.
