The PSA is saddened to hear of the passing of Lawrence Sáez, former member and trustee of the PSA and Professor of Political Economy of South Asia at the SOAS, University of London.
From 2006 to 2009, Lawrence served on the PSA’s Executive Committee. During and after his term as trustee, he played a very active role promoting PSA engagement with other political studies bodies, notably the International Political Studies Association (IPSA) and the American Political Studies Association (APSA). Lawrence also served as a group convenor of the Politics of South Asia specialist group.
After his cancer diagnosis, Lawrence wrote very candidly in Times Higher Education and Huffington Post about his experiences with treatment and coping with his illness. It was to the awe of many that Lawrence continued to work throughout his illness, still taking up many leadership roles at SOAS and within the wider political studies community.
The PSA offers its condolences to Lawrence’s family, friends, students and colleagues at SOAS at this difficult time.
A more detailed announcement regarding Lawrence’s passing may be found here [1] on SOAS’s website. A public memorial service will be announced by SOAS at a later date.
