The PSA is delighted to launch this new initiative to support black and minority ethnic scholars currently undertaking PhD study in politics and international relations.

We are looking to award three Diverse Voices Scholarships in 2022 to students who meet both the following criteria:

  • A PhD student (in their second or final year in 2022/23 academic year) affiliated to a UK Higher Education Institution; and,
  • Those self-identified as Black British, Asian British, or minority ethnic UK permanent residents.

Applications from women scholars will be particularly welcomed.

The Diverse Voices Scholars will benefit, for one year, from:

  • Free PSA Membership
  • All expenses covered attendance at the PSA’s Annual Conference (PSA23)
  • Networking opportunities during the PSA events and with PSA Executive Committee members
  • Mentoring (especially on academic publishing)
  • Up to £500 pounds to cover research-related expenses.

To apply, please send the following to us at diversevoices@psa.ac.uk by 17 June 2022:

We are hoping to award the 2022 scholarships by July with a view to supporting the scholars during 2022/23 academic year.

Discussing these scholarships, the PSA’s EDI Trustee Dr Roula Nezi said: “We know that black and other ethnic minorities are under-represented in our discipline at all levels. And while the barrier to addressing this inequality is largely structural, we also know that making students feel welcome and supported can make the difference when it comes to them completing their studies, establishing a career-related to Politics and creating the change we need to see both within and outside of academia.”

The PSA’s Chair Professor Roger Awan-Scully added: “Promoting and achieving equality and diversity in Political Studies is a core value of the PSA. As an association, we are both uniquely positioned to champion change and committed to taking positive action such as these Diverse Voices scholarships. We would strongly encourage you to apply or to support your students or colleagues to do so.”

If you would like to learn more or are interested in becoming a mentor for the Diverse Voices Scholars please contact Roula or Roger at  diversevoices@psa.ac.uk

These scholarships are possible due to the PSA’s Diverse Voices Fund. The bigger the fund, the more support we can give so if you are interested in championing Diverse Voices or making a donation, please see here for more details on how.
