PSA Statement in support of academics providing advice on rules of electoral registration

There has been some recent discussion in the media concerning academics being subjected to online abuse for informing their students about their legal rights relating to the regulations on voter registration. Clearly the PSA does not have a view about how people vote, or even whether they ultimately choose to do so. However, we do think it is entirely appropriate that our members should be free to inform students about the rules of voter registration, so they are able to vote on 12 December if they wish to.

We wish to express support for any of our members who are advising their students about the rules of voter registration, not least because universities are now under a legal obligation not just to advise students on these rules, but actually to encourage students to register to vote. The PSA wants its members to feel empowered and supported by your universities and by the wider society, with any online abuse being dealt in the appropriate manner.
