Tackling key policy challenges through social science
The Academy of Social Sciences/Campaign for Social Science’s latest report ‘Beyond the ballot’ (November 24) gives social science insights on eight key policy challenges from over 100 social scientists including those from the Political Studies Association.
Covering health and social care, inequalities and welfare, housing, macroeconomics, regional equity and growth, borders and migration, knowledge and technology, and energy and climate, you can download the report here.
The new UK Government’s five missions and broader policy agenda to tackle a ‘societal blackhole’ are focussed on tackling economic growth, becoming a green superpower, improving the NHS/reducing health inequality, justice system reform and raising educational standards - all areas where social science evidence is vital if progress is to be achieved.
Report co-author and the academy’s Head of Policy & Public Affairs Dr Ed Bridges adds: ‘The report is – we hope – a timely reminder to the new UK Government about what applied social science evidence can bring to the table. With a ‘mission-led’ approach to policymaking, and a strong focus on social issues, we think the new government is well-placed to make better use of research and expertise from the social sciences. As we look ahead to our programme of work for 2025, it would be great to hear from members of the Political Studies Association if there are areas where we could work together to bring policy-relevant research to the attention of elected officials at Westminster and the devolved parliaments.’
