HEFCE, in association with other UK funding councils, has announced a more nuanced approach to their policy on Open Access, if you begin from a hard line Gold OA perspective. It has now been agreed that articles published in journals that do not comply with the UK funding bodies’ stated open access policy will still be eligible for the next research excellence framework.

The annoucnement signals a departure from earlier versions of the policy which would have have required all articles and conference proceedings submitted to the next REF to be made open access within certain embargo periods.
