CANCELLED: PSA Annual International Conference 2020
It is with great sadness that the Political Studies Association (PSA) must announce that our annual international conference in Edinburgh (6-8 April 2020) has been cancelled. This includes the PSA’s Undergraduate Conference (3 April) as well as all additional events associated with our presence in the Scottish capital.
As colleagues will appreciate, this difficult decision has been made after reviewing the situation both internationally and in the United Kingdom. This follows weeks of close consultation with trustees, staff and the conference convenors at the University of Edinburgh.
Given the current concerns on the COVID-19 outbreak, the risks posed to travel and large gatherings, and our primary responsibility to the health and welfare of our members, our delegates, our staff and our guests, the PSA has been left with no choice than to cancel the event.

PSA at 70: Re-imagining Politics
6th - 8th April 2020
As the PSA turns 70, politics faces multiple uncertainties. The international liberal order is being challenged by new security threats and domestic nationalist resurgences. Established party systems are disintegrating as trust in representative democracy diminishes. Confronted with a climate emergency, traditional policies of growth and consumption are under increased scrutiny. Ours is also a time of democratic institutional innovation, path-breaking constitutional experiments and vibrant bottom-up practices of inclusive decision-making.
Against this backdrop of change, falling back on well-tested theories and practices seems less and less productive. Radical and accelerating transformations call for new ways of understanding, explaining and intervening in the political world.
PSA’s 70th anniversary provides us with a double opportunity: to take stock of these transformations and in light of them to re-imagine both the study and practice of politics. Held in the Scottish capital, itself a site of democratic innovation and mobilisation, the 2020 meeting of the PSA aims to provide a compelling arena for kickstarting processes of re-imagining politics.
