External Examining in Politics: Rigour and Inclusion
The PSA Teaching and Learning Network has launched its third webinar series 'Teaching Politics and IR Online: Key Issues, Skills and Pedagogy '. This series has been recorded and relevant information and resources can be found here.
There is considerable variation between institutions around the UK in expectations, processes, and experiences regarding external examiners. What could be a very valuable tool for improving the rigour and quality of our teaching is sometimes approached as a necessary inconvenience. There are also inefficiencies in the 'market' of external examiners, with some academics keen to be appointed to support career progression or for altruistic reasons, but they are often unable to identify positions because appointments are often made through personal networks and word of mouth. This webinar seeks to spark a discussion about the way we approach external examining in the discipline in the hope of increasing the quality, diversity and inclusion.
This webinar was delivered live on Tuesday 1st December, led by Helen Williams (University of Nottingham).
