Academic Conference

The History of Political Marketing

The PSA Politics and History specialist group and the PSA' Political Marketing specialist group invite proposals for papers for an event on the History of Political Marketing.

For our purposes, History can cover relatively recent events (for example the birth, operation and death of Change UK) as well as those in the more distant past and can approach either a set period of time or changes over a longer period.   We are interested in material on any aspect of marketing.

The following list is indicative only:

  • Marketing communications material (such as leaflets and posters)
  • Political “messaging” around particular key events, organisations or elections
  • The use of graphics, imagery and music
  • Attitudes to marketing within political parties
  • Media relations
  • Public Relations
  • Histories of Political Communications
  • Branding strategies

The one-day event, which we plan to operate on a hybrid basis, will take place on Monday 6th September 2021 at a university TBC in the North West of England.

General queries and brief proposals for papers should be sent to Paula Keaveney, Convenor of the Political Marketing Group, keavenep@edgehill.ac.uk, by 25th June 2021.

Please let us know also if you would prefer to present virtually or whether you would prefer, and be able, to travel to the venue.

Again, we especially encourage submissions from groups typically under-represented in academia, as well as early-career researchers.
