Local Politics and Governance News: September 23rd 2022
Hi all,
We hope that you’ve all had a lovely and restful summer, and are looking forward to the start of the academic year. Many thanks to everyone who submitted their abstracts for our Local Politics panels at the PSA. We’ve had some fabulous papers and have 3 panels covering Place-Shaping and Local Statecraft; Centre-Local Relations; and Mayors, Devolution, and Democracy.
Forthcoming Events
With the new government installed, and today’s mini-budget ahead, we felt that it would be really useful for us all to get a sense of what the implications will be for local politics and in particular, for levelling up. So we have arranged an online event on this topic on 21st October 1-3pm, entitled ‘The Future of Levelling Up: Does it Have One?’ We particularly wanted to invite practitioners who could share their insights, from regions that are at the forefront of the devolution agenda, so our line-up is:
Andy Hollingworth, Head of Devolution Strategy, Greater Manchester Combined Authority
Matt Barton, Assistant Head of Strategy and Localism, Cornwall Council.
Mark Sandford, Senior Researcher, House of Commons.
Arianna Giovannini, Reader in Local Politics and Public Policy, De Montfort
More information here and sign up here. Do feel free to share this event with your networks. As ever, the more the merrier!
Comms Vacancy
On another note, we want to thank Sofia Collingwood for the work that she has been doing for us as communications officer for Local Politics and Governance. With deep regret, she has had to step down, which also means that we have a vacancy for someone to look after our Specialist Group coms – in particular, our social media. If you are interested, contact Pete and myself for more information J
