Political Economy Perspectives
17 December 2025

The Political Economy Perspectives specialist group (PEP) brings together a global network of scholars conducting research into political economy, broadly understood as a form of analysis which recognises that the political and economic dimensions of social life are comprehensively intertwined, and that neither can be satisfactorily understood without the other. We welcome researchers working in traditions such as comparative political economy, international political economy, global political economy and critical approaches to political economy, as well as related subfields and disciplines such as political sociology and economic geography.

Although the group originated in the British tradition of political economy, and continues to support work in this vein, our research workshops and conference panels embrace a diverse range of geographical, thematic, historical and methodological perspectives.

The specialist group organises panels at the PSA annual conference, as well as regular workshops that reflect the breadth of work in political economy and emerging areas of interest within the field. It aims to provide a national and international platform for early career researchers and doctoral students, and we particularly encourage such scholars to get in touch with paper ideas, panel proposals and workshop topics.

Objectives of the group

  1. To promote and advance the study of political economy on a national and international basis.
  2. To facilitate discussion on the nature and future of political economy as a form of analysis.
  3. To boost dialogue between existing networks of political economists whose scholarship focuses on the UK, or comparative analysis involving the UK.
  4. To foster and encourage collaborative research in political economy.
  5. To provide a national and international platform for the work of early-career researchers and doctoral students specialising in political economy.
