Television and Social Media in the UK General Election

Professor Mark Wheeler, Professor of Political Communications
London Metropolitan University

In the era of mass and multi-media communications, the political classes have introduced advertising and public relations techniques into modern British election campaigns. This lecture will consider the impact of political marketing on UK politics with especial reference to the 2015 election. It seeks to consider how politics has become a ‘product’ in relation to polling, agenda-setting, leadership, negative campaigning, ‘spin’ and celebrity endorsements. In tandem, it will discuss how the mainstream parties have deployed social media in recent campaigns. Ultimately, it will analyse, assess and explain whether these tactics have proved to be healthy or not for British representational democracy.

Followed by refreshments.
