EPOP and Race, Migration and Intersectionality joint Panel
70th PSA Conference – 6-8 April 2020 – Edinburgh International Conference Centre and Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa
The growing constituency of ethnic minority voters has been a topic of increasing interest among both analysts and political actors in recent elections. Public attitudes to immigration, cultural diversity, and competing conceptions of Britishness remain contested and divisive, and have become central to our understanding of recent political change. At the PSA’s 70th international conference, the PSA Specialist Groups in Race, Migration and Intersectionality, and Elections, Public Opinion and Parties will bring together the expertise of these two groups at a joint panel. Proposals are welcome for papers that speak to the following issues:
- Political attitudes and behaviours of ethnic minority or immigrant voters and non-voters.
- The descriptive and substantive representation of ethnic groups in elected political bodies and other political institutions.
- The role of other characteristics or identities which intersect with ethnicity, including gender, class, and education.
- Public opinion on race, migration and intersectionality.
Papers need not be focussed on the UK or Great Britain. We are supportive of methodological pluralism and welcome proposals utilising qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods.
As above, the convenors encourage submissions from PhD candidates, Early Career Academics and under-represented groups.
We follow the PSA guidance on not accepting any panels with only male speakers.
Applicants will be contacted to confirm whether their papers will be accepted for this panel ahead of the PSA’s general deadline of 19 October 2019. This will give applicants the time necessary to resubmit their paper to the general pool if need be.
If submitting to this panel, please send a title, abstract of no more than 250 words, and information about current position and affiliation to nicole.martin@manchester.ac.uk and j.greenwood3@lse.ac.uk by the end of Friday 11 October 2019.
