PSA 2020 joint CfP for Young People’s Politics and Race, Migration and Intersectionality specialist groups
PSA Annual conference “Re-imagining Politics,” 6-8 April 2020, Edinburgh.
Call for papers for a joint panel between the PSA Young People’s Politics specialist group (YPP SG) and the Race, Migration and Intersectionality specialist group (RMI SG).
The PSA’s 70th international conference on the theme of ‘re-imagining politics’ provides a timely opportunity for the YPP and RMI specialist groups to bring together the collective expertise of our members. Whilst in isolation the YPP group focuses on the meaning and practice of politics for young people, and the RMI group focuses upon ethnic minority identity, immigration and belonging, we believe that these research foci share powerful commonalities. As climate collapse raises issues of energy and food security, and war continues to ravage communities in countries around the world, young people are displaced in a search for safety, stability and work. At the same time, we are interested in the particular ways in which young people from different ethnic minority communities conceive and perceive political participation, and in turn their attitudes towards/experiences of racism in contemporary political discourse.
As such, we welcome papers for this panel that address any of the following questions in the broadest possible sense:
- What does ‘politics’ and political participation mean to young people of different ethnicities?
- How and why do young people from different ethnic communities choose to participate (or not) in politics and democracy?
- How is the landscape of young people’s citizenship and political participation evolving in the context of global migration patterns?
- What impact does the resurgence of racism and the far right have on young people and what are their role and attitudes in such developments?
Please send proposals of around 200 words (including a title) and short biography by Monday 7 October 2019 to the James Weinberg (james.weinberg@sheffield.ac.uk), Aurelien Mondon (am2124@bath.ac.uk) and to the YPP email address (youngpeoplespolitics@outlook.com).
Applicants will be contacted to confirm whether their papers will be accepted for this panel ahead of the PSA’s general deadline of 21st October. This will give applicants the time necessary to resubmit their paper to the general pool if need be.
The convenors encourage submissions from PhD candidates and Early Career Academics. We follow the PSA guidance on not accepting any panels with only male speakers.
